A place where physics and metaphysics meld into one
Deep within the Bermuda triangle, there is an island kept secret from the world. It is called Thinkers Island. Reality is very different there and not subject to the laws of nature as we know them. On this island physics and metaphysics meld into one.
Writing about physics, and science is a doable task. Depending on the educational achievement of the author, the article can be of varying complexities, from a simple observation easily understood to a twenty-page thesis with laboratory experiments, complicated formulas, and terminology backed by deep understandings of a particular field. There may be some challenges, but a few more mathematical equations and further experimental models can shed further light on its subject.
Metaphysics, on the other hand, does not have the luxury of formulas and facts to back it up and is widely accepted as abstract theories with no basis in reality. Before the 19th century, the term Natural Philosophy or philosophy of nature was dominant and relied on reasoning and explanations about life. When experimental science and scientific method became specialized, the term science from then on relied on empirical evidence, and, natural philosophy and metaphysics now fell in another separate category.
How then, do we discuss such themes in our modern society. There are the purists who argue that a good grip on the writings of Aristotle, Plato, St. Augustine and on and on would provide a basis. Realistically though after hours and hours of reading such at the end they are all Hypothesis and, the Philosophy of nature revealed to me by an indiginal tribesman may resonate better with my understanding than the available volumes of philosophy and metaphysics written by scholars.
Although in essence religious theology is metaphysical, I separate it from this conversation because It has many formats, and each one comes entwined with belief structures that are believed to be empirically derived thus empowering the believer to argue the unknown with conviction. The emotional momentum accumulated like gold, over the centuries by these belief structures comes with documentation, and these beliefs are handed down by generations: each with a cultural tint and flavor, and each considered absolute. Therefore since that which falls within the grouping of religion is generally not discussable for self-edification but the edification of the doctrine I prefer to keep religion apart.
I enjoy traveling within my consciousness and running into thoughts, ones that transcend my understanding of nature and the world around me. Although I may not be able to soak up all that is available from this consciousness realm, I get a glimpse of what could be, and from that I formulate ideas.
Written for young adults, Thinkers Island, the first in a trilogy introduces philosophical and metaphysical concepts throughout the book. It is written as a conspiracy thriller with a storyline that takes its protagonist through an adventure expanding his understanding of the world around him and the world within him. The Battle For Consciousness is a conversation of metaphysics in the purest form possible.
